George Koltanowski, grandmaster and chess journalist, passed away at age 96. He was famous for his blindfold exhibitions and remained active in chess into his 90s. In his prime he beat Rubinstein, drew Tarrasch and also agreed a draw with Alekhine--a pawn up! The obituary includes a photo and an international career record.

John Charles "J.C." Thompson, founder of the Texas Chess Association and a USCF Master Emeritus, died at 8 p.m. July 5. He is best known for popularizing the Swiss system in tournament play. Here is a retrospective, by TCA President Selby Anderson with some history, stories and games.
